Winter Fun

There are so many things to do in winter! As an outdoor focused school, both fun and learning do not stop when the mercury starts to dip.
At CRSS, we use cross country skis not only for fun, but also as transportation! Walking in the snow can be difficult and time consuming, but on a pair of skis, a lot of ground can be covered quickly. In younger grades, students learn the basics of putting skis on and taking them off, balance, and how to move. While in older grades, students are able to challenge themselves further and learn more advanced techniques.  Student on skis

When the snow starts to get deep, that's when students of all grades can have the opportunity to put on a pair of snowshoes and enjoy the outdoors even in the middle of winter. Snowshoes open up a whole new world of winter fun!

Historically, the 6th grade elective "Winter Survival" class has built a quinzee each year (providing there's enough snow on the ground).

What is a quinzee?
An emergency snow shelter that is easy and quick to build, and can provide life-saving shelter in emergency situations.

Step #1 - Find and prepare the site
Step #2 - Gather TONS of snow!
